1. Voltage (V)
Voltage is the most important spec to get right, because it must match your motor and controller. You cannot safely swap a 36V battery for a 48V one (or vice versa) without the correct system to support it.
The most common e-bike voltages are:
- 24V — older or entry-level bikes.
- 36V — very common on commuter and city e-bikes.
- 48V — the most popular choice for modern e-bikes, offering more power.
- 52V — higher-performance setups.
Your battery label will state this clearly (for example, "36V" or "48V"). Always replace like-for-like unless your whole system is rated for a different voltage.
2. Capacity (Ah) — and What Wh means
Capacity tells you how much energy the battery stores, which determines your range (how far you can ride per charge). It's shown in amp-hours (Ah) — common values are 10Ah, 13Ah, 15Ah and 20Ah. The higher the Ah, the further you can go.
You may also see watt-hours (Wh). This is the true measure of total energy and is calculated as:
Volts (V) × Amp-hours (Ah) = Watt-hours (Wh)
Example: 48V × 15Ah = 720Wh
When replacing, you can usually choose the same Ah or a higher one for more range — as long as the voltage, connector and physical size still match your bike.
3. Connector / Pin Type

- The discharge connector — the main connection between the battery and the bike. These vary in shape and in the number of pins, so count them.
- The charging port — where the charger plugs in (commonly a round 3-pin port, but it varies by brand).
The easiest way to identify these is to look closely and count the pins, then photograph each connector. A 4-pin and a 5-pin connector look similar but are not interchangeable, so this detail matters.
4. Mounting Type / Frame
Finally, identify how the battery physically attaches to your bike. The most common types are:
- Hailong (downtube) — mounts onto a base plate along the downtube; one of the most common styles.
- Silverfish (rear rack) — slides onto a rail, usually on a rear carrier.
- Frame-integrated / in-tube — sits inside the frame.
- Rear rack pack — a block-style battery built into the rack.
