Your battery is the heart of your e-bike — and the most expensive part to get wrong. Whether you're replacing a worn-out pack or upgrading for more range, buying the right battery comes down to understanding a handful of key specifications. The golden rule: match, don't guess
A replacement battery has to work with your bike's motor and controller, and physically fit your frame. Get any of these wrong and it either won't work or won't fit. There are four specifications that matter most:
- Voltage (V)
- Capacity (Ah / Wh)
- Connector / pin type
- Mounting type
Almost all of this is printed on the label of your current battery. Note it down (or take a photo) before you start. Let's look at each in turn.
1. Voltage (V)
Voltage is the most important spec, because it must match your bike's system. You can't simply swap a 36V battery for a 48V one without the correct controller and motor. The most common e-bike voltages are:
- 24V — older or entry-level bikes.
- 36V — very common on city and commuter e-bikes.
- 48V — the most popular choice on modern e-bikes, with more power.
- 52V — higher-performance setups.
Always replace like-for-like unless your whole system is designed for a different voltage.
2. Capacity and range (Ah and Wh)
Capacity determines your range — how far you can ride on a charge. It's measured in amp-hours (Ah); common values are 10Ah, 13Ah, 15Ah and 20Ah. The higher the Ah, the further you go.
You may also see watt-hours (Wh), which is the true measure of stored energy:
Volts (V) × Amp-hours (Ah) = Watt-hours (Wh)
Example: 48V × 15Ah = 720Wh
As a rough guide, every 10Wh gives very roughly half a mile to a mile of range, depending on rider weight, terrain, assist level and conditions. When replacing, you can usually choose the same Ah or step up to a higher one for more range.
3. Connector and pin type
Your battery connects to the bike and to the charger, and these connectors must match. There are two to check:
- The discharge connector — the main link to the bike. These vary in shape and pin count (for example 4-pin vs 5-pin), so count them.
- The charging port — where the charger plugs in.
The easiest approach is to count the pins and photograph each connector, since similar-looking plugs aren't always interchangeable.
4. Mounting type
Finally, match how the battery attaches to your frame. The most common types are:
- Hailong (downtube) — mounts on a base plate along the downtube; the most common type.
- Silverfish (rear rack) — slides onto a rail on a rear carrier.
- Rear rack pack — a block-style battery built into the rack.
- Frame-integrated — housed inside the frame tube.

Don't forget the charger
